「petrochemical」は結合形の「petro-」（ギリシャ語由来）と「chemical」（ギリシャ語／ラテン語経由の語）から成り、'petro-'は最終的に「petroleum」経由で『岩（いわ）』を意味する『petra』に由来し、『chemical』はギリシャ語の『khēmia』（変成の技術）から来ている。
「petrochemical」は20世紀に英語で『petroleum』の接頭辞『petro-』と『chemical』を結合して作られ、石油や天然ガスの大規模な精製・化学処理が独立した化学物質の分類を生んだことから生じた語である。
