語源
「petrifaction」はラテン語の『petrificatio』（動詞形『petrificare』から）に由来し、『petra』（ギリシャ語由来）は「岩」を、『ficare』は「〜にする」を意味した。
『petrifaction』はラテン語後期の『petrificatio』や動詞『petrificare』から発し、フランス語の影響（例:『pétrifier』）を経て中英語・近代英語に取り入れられた。
元来は「（物を）石にすること」という文字通りの意味だったが、時とともに「恐怖などで動けなくする（石のように固まらせる）」という比喩的意味も持つようになった。
