語源
'periodontitis'はギリシャ語の要素「peri-（周り）」「odont-（歯）」および接尾辞「-itis（炎症）」から来ている。
'periodontitis'は新ラテン語（医学ラテン語）でギリシャ語語根を組み合わせて作られ、そこから英語の医療用語として採用された。
元々は「歯の周りの炎症」という文字通りの意味だったが、次第に歯周組織に起こる細菌性の慢性疾患（組織・骨の喪失を伴う）を指す専門用語になった。
