語源
「perfidy」はラテン語の「perfidia」に由来し、『per-』は「徹底的に・通して」を、『fides』は「信義・信頼」を意味した。
中世フランス語やアンゴ＝ノルマン語の「perfidie／perfide」などを経て中英語の「perfidy」となり、現代英語の「perfidy」になった。
当初は「信義の違反・不誠実」を意味していたが、時間とともにその核心的意味を保ちつつ、より広く「欺瞞・裏切り的な行為」を指して使われるようになった。
