語源
『parable』はギリシャ語の『parabolē』に由来し、接頭辞の『para-』は「そばに」を、動詞『ballein』は「投げる」を意味した。
『parabolē』は後期ラテン語の『parabola』を経て、古フランス語の『parable』や中英語の『parabole／parable』となり、最終的に現代英語の『parable』になった。
当初は「比較（並べて示すもの）」を意味したが、次第に「道徳的・宗教的教訓を示す短い例え話」という現在の意味へと変化した。
