卵のための器官・場所
「ovary」はラテン語の『ovarium』に由来し、『ovum』は「卵」を意味した。
『ovarium』（卵のための場所）が中世・古フランス語や中英語を経て現代英語の『ovary』になった。
当初は「卵のための場所」を意味していたが、次第に動物の生殖腺や植物の胚珠を含む部分という現在の意味に発展した。
