語源
「orthopedics」は近代ラテン語／ネオラテン語の「orthopaedia」に由来し、最終的にはギリシャ語の「orthopaideia」から来ている。接頭辞の「orth-」（ギリシャ語の「orthos」）は「まっすぐ」を意味し、「paideia」は「養育・教育」を意味する。
「orthopedics」はフランス語の「orthopédie」や英語の「orthopaedics（-ae-綴り）」などの形を経て、最終的にアメリカ英語の簡略形である「orthopedics」になった。用語は18世紀にニコラ・アンドリーの著作『Orthopaedia』によって普及した。
当初は主に子どもの変形の矯正・予防を指していたが、時代とともにすべての年齢の運動器の疾患や外傷を扱う医学の専門分野という現在の意味に広がった。
