語源
「non-electrolyte」はラテン語の接頭辞「non（…でない）」と「electrolyte」を組み合わせた語である。「electrolyte」は近代の学術的な造語で、ギリシャ語の「ēlektron（琥珀：電気現象に関連）」に由来する接頭辞「electro-」と、「分解・溶解」を意味するギリシャ語語根（-lysis/lyein）に関連する要素から成る。
「electrolyte」は19世紀に電気分解（electrolysis）などの概念とともに学術英語で生まれ、その後英語で接頭辞「non-」を付けて「non-electrolyte」（電解質でないもの）という語が作られた。
