語源
「monstrosity」はラテン語の「monstrositas」に由来し、『monstr-』（ラテン語の「monstrum」から）は「前兆・異常な印（しばしば不吉な徴候や怪物的なもの）」を意味した。
「monstrosity」は後期ラテン語の「monstrositas」や古仏語の「monstruosité」などを経て、最終的に現代英語の「monstrosity」になった。
当初は「前兆や異常事象（前触れ）」を意味していたが、次第に「非常に醜い・奇形の物」を意味するようになり、さらに比喩的に「ひどく不当・不快なもの」を指すようになった。
