語源
「molding」は英語の動詞 'mold'（英: 'mould'）に由来し、古フランス語の「moule／modele」（型・模型）を経て、ラテン語の 'modulus'（'modus' の小辞）にさかのぼることができる。「modulus」は『尺度・様式』を意味する。
