語源
『microscopy』はギリシャ語の要素『mikros』と『skopein』に由来し、『mikros』は「小さい」を、『skopein』は「見る・調べる」を意味した。
『microscopy』はフランス語の『microscopie』などの近代ラテン語的な形を経て、英語では『microscope』に接尾辞『-y』が付いて形成された。
当初は主に顕微鏡で見る行為を指したが、次第に顕微鏡を用いる技術・方法やそれを扱う学問分野全体を指すようになった。
