語源
「mezcal」はスペイン語に由来し、最終的にはナワトル語の'mexcalli'（一般に'metl'＋'ixcalli'と分析される）に由来する。ここで'metl'は「リュウゼツラン」、'ixcalli'は「焼いた／蒸した」を意味した。
ナワトル語の'mexcalli'は植民地時代にスペイン語で' mezcal'として採用され、そのまま英語にも' mezcal'として入った。
当初は「焼いた（あるいは蒸した）リュウゼツラン」やその産物を意味していたが、時間を経てリュウゼツランから作られる蒸留酒を主に指すようになった。
