語源
'metonymy'はギリシャ語の『metonymia』（μετωνυμία）に由来し、『meta-』は『変化・～の後』を、『onym-/onoma』は『名前』を意味した。
『metonymia』はラテン語（後期ラテン語）を通り、学術的なラテン語・ギリシャ語の用法から英語に入り、現在の英単語『metonymy』になった。
当初は『名前の置き換え（change of name）』を文字どおり意味したが、次第に関連のある別名で表す修辞的手法を指す専門用語へと発展した。
