語源
「mentalism」は近代英語で形容詞「mental」と接尾辞「-ism」から形成された語で、「mental」はラテン語の「mentalis」（心に関する）に由来し、「-ism」は教義・体系・実践を示す。
ラテン語の「mentalis」は「心」を意味する「mens（mentis）」から派生した。形容詞「mental」は中世ラテン語やフランス語を経て英語に入り、名詞「mentalism」は19世紀後半に英語で心に関する学説や実践を示す語として形成された。
