'memoryless'は名詞'memory'と接尾辞'-less'から英語で作られた語で、'memory'は最終的にラテン語' memoria'（古フランス語'memoire'経由）に由来し『記憶』を意味し、接尾辞'-less'は古英語の'lēas'に由来し『〜がない・〜を欠く』を意味する。
