語源
『masque』は中世フランス語・イタリア語由来で、特にフランス語の『masque』やイタリア語の『maschera』に由来し、最終的には中世ラテン語の『masca』（『仮面』や『幽霊』の意）に遡る。
『masque』は中世フランス語『masque』（およびイタリア語『maschera』）から変化し、初期近代英語で仮面や上演を表す語として用いられるようになり、つづり『masque』は特に宮廷の祝祭的上演を指す語として定着した。
当初は『仮面』や『出現』を意味していたが、次第に豪華な仮面舞踏・祝祭的上演を指す意味（および一部では化粧用マスクの意味）へと変化した。
