語源
「masker」は英語で動詞'mask'から作られ、'mask'は中期フランス語'masque'やイタリア語'maschera'（中世ラテン語/古イタリア語の'masca'由来）にさかのぼる。
'mask'は中期フランス語'masque'（およびイタリア語'maschera'）を経て英語に入り、英語では接尾辞'-er'をつけて動作者を表す名詞'masker'（文字通り「マスクする人／仮面を着ける人」）が作られた。
もともと「仮面（顔を覆う物）」や「覆い隠す行為」に関係していたが、現在でも「仮面を着ける人」という基本的意味を保ちつつ、比喩的に身元や意図を隠す人にも使われるようになった。
