語源
「magus」はラテン語の語 'magus' に由来し、その語はギリシャ語 'μάγος'（'magos'）から借用されたもので、最終的に古ペルシア語の 'maguš' は「祭司階級の一員」を意味した。
古ペルシア語の 'maguš' がギリシャ語 'μάγος'（'magos'）を経てラテン語 'magus' に入り、古フランス語やラテン語形を通じて中英語に入り、やがて現代英語の 'magus' になった。
当初は「祭司階級の一員」を意味していたが、時代を経て「賢者」や「魔術師（魔術的・秘術的知識を持つ者）」という意味に発展した。
