語源
『mafia』はシチリア語／イタリア語に由来し、シチリア語の『mafiusu』やイタリア語の『maffia』に由来する。語根は不確かだが『大胆さ』『いばること』『保護』の意味と関連づけられることが多い。
シチリア語の『mafiusu』（『大胆な、尊大な』の意）や19世紀のイタリア語『maffia』が、19世紀末から20世紀初頭にかけて英語の『mafia』として採用され、次第に組織犯罪集団を指す語になった。
当初は『大胆さ』や地域的な『保護』の意味を持っていたが、次第に組織犯罪集団や秘密裏に権力を行使する派閥を意味するようになった。
