「liquidator」はラテン語の動詞『liquidare』（『液体にする・溶かす・清算する』の意）に由来し、語根『liquidus』は『液体の・流動的な』を意味します。
『liquidare』は後期ラテン語を経てフランス語の『liquidateur／liquider』に入り、英語は法務・金融用語として名詞形『liquidator』を借用しました。
元来は『液体にする』という物理的な意味でしたが、次第に『清算する・債務を決着させる』という意味に変化し、さらに比喩的に『抹消する人』という用法も生じました。
