語源
「lexeme」は新ラテン語／フランス語の「lexème」に由来し、最終的には「語、話」を意味するギリシャ語の「lexis」と、最小区別単位を表す語尾「-eme」からなる。
「lexeme」はフランス語の「lexème」から英語に取り入れられ、20世紀に構造主義言語学で抽象的な語の単位という概念が確立される中で専門用語として定着した。
当初は構造言語学の専門用語として作られたが、意味はほとんど変わらず、現在も抽象的な語の単位や辞書項目を指す専門語である。
