『isopod』はギリシャ語に由来し、要素の『isos（等しい）』と『pous／pod-（足）』から成り、新ラテン語・分類学の語形『Isopoda』で使われた。
『isopod』は分類学上の新ラテン語『Isopoda』から形成され、英語の学術語として取り入れられ、分類上の意味を保っている。
