語源
「internationalist」は英語に由来し、「international」＋接尾辞「-ist」から成り立つ。「international」は最終的にフランス語を経てラテン語の「inter-」（「〜の間」）と「natio」（「出身・国民」）に由来し、「-ist」はフランス語／ラテン語由来で支持者を表す。
「internationalist」はフランス語の「internationaliste」や、（労働者組織などの）固有名詞「International」から変化し、19せいきちゅうごろに現代英語の「internationalist」として定着した。
当初は「（特に労働者の）インターナショナルのメンバー・支持者」を指すことが多かったが、次第に「国際協力や国際主義を支持する人」という広い意味に変化した。
