語源
「infusoria」はニュー・ラテン語（学術ラテン語）に由来し、最終的にはラテン語の「infusorium」から来ている。「infus-」は「注ぎ入れる」を意味する動詞「infundere」に由来する。
「infusoria」はニュー・ラテン語／ラテン語の「infusorium」から英語に入り（浸出液中に見られる生物を指す語として）、18〜19世紀に集合名詞として英語に定着した。
当初は「（腐敗物の）浸出液に見られる生物」を指していたが、次第に「繊毛虫などの原生動物」や、観賞魚の稚魚用の微小飼料を指すように意味が変化した。
