語源
'hydroplane'はギリシャ語の要素に由来し、具体的には「水」を意味する'hydōr'と「滑る・平ら」を示す語根の結合で、水面を滑るものや動作を指す語として作られた。
'hydroplane'は20世紀初頭に水面を滑る船や水上艇を指す語として作られ、その後20世紀中頃に車のタイヤが濡れた路面で滑る現象（ハイドロプレーニング）を表す動詞用法に広がった。
当初は水面を滑る船を指していたが、時間を経て『路面の水膜でタイヤが滑る』という現象や動作を表す現在の意味に拡張された。
