語源
「history」はギリシャ語に由来し、具体的には「historia」という語から来ている。「historia」は「調査、探究」を意味した（動詞'historein'「問いただす、探求して知る」から）。
「history」はギリシャ語の「historia」からラテン語の「historia」に入り、次に古フランス語の「estoire/hoistoire」を経て中英語の「historie」になり、最終的に現代英語の「history」になった。
当初は「問いや調査（による知識）」を意味していたが、時とともに「過去の出来事の記録・記述」という現在の意味に発展した。
