語源
「hijack」は20世紀初頭の米国俗語に由来し、おそらく「high」（たとえば "highway"）と「jack」（奪う、乗っ取る）という要素からできた語です。
当初は（特に路上での）強奪を指す俗語として現れ、しばしば "high-jack" や "highjack" と綴られました。20世紀中頃までに綴りは "hijack" に定着し、特に航空機の乗っ取りなど、乗り物の強制的な掌握を意味するようになりました。
元々は（特に路上での）強盗を意味しましたが、時とともに乗り物の強制的な掌握や、さらに比喩的にプロセスや会話、システムを乗っ取ることを意味するように変化しました。
