語源
「hierarchism」はギリシャ語の「hierarkhia」から発し（中世ラテン語「hierarchia」を経由）、'hier-'は「聖なる」を、'arkhia/arch-'は「支配／長」を意味した。
「hierarchism」は中世ラテン語の「hierarchia」を通り、後期ラテン語やフランス語を経て英語に入り、名詞' hierarchy'と接尾辞'-ism'が結びついて階層（序列）制度を示す語になった。
当初は「司祭の支配」や「宗教的な支配」を指したが、徐々にあらゆる階層的な秩序や権威の体系を指すようになった。
