「hater」は中英語の「haten」に由来し、「hat-」は「嫌う」を意味していた。

「haten」は「-er」接尾辞が付加され、現代英語の「hater」になった。

当初は「嫌う人」を意味し、この意味は現代でもほぼ同じである。
