語源
「halfback」は英語に由来し、接合語の「half」＋「back」から来ている。ここで「half」は「2つの等しい部分のうちの1つ」を意味し、「back」は「後ろの部分・位置」を意味する。
18～19世紀には特に競技や軍事の記述で「half-back」とハイフン付きで表記され、その後現代の単語「halfback」に収束した。
当初は文字どおり「後方の中間に位置するもの」を意味していたが、次第にアメリカンフットボールやラグビーなどの特定のポジションを指すようになった。
