「fur-seal」は英語に由来する合成語で、『fur』（毛皮）と『seal』（アザラシ）から成る。「fur」は古英語の『fūr』（原ゲルマン語 *fūraz）に由来し「毛、皮」を意味し、「seal」は古英語の『seolh』（原ゲルマン語 *selk-）に由来し「海棲哺乳類のアザラシ」を意味する。
