語源
「fetishism」はフランス語の「fétichisme」に由来し、それはさらにポルトガル語の「feitiço（人工物・護符）」に遡る。
「fetishism」は17〜18世紀にフランス語やポルトガル語を経て英語に入った。元は力を持つと信じられた作られた物を指し、そこから現在の宗教的・性的などの意味に発展した。
当初は超自然的な力を持つと考えられた物（護符・人工物）を指していたが、時代とともに宗教的・人類学的意味や性的・心理的な執着の意味へと広がった。
