語源
「f-stop」は英語由来。特に『f』はラテン語の『focus』に由来する記号で焦点距離比を示し、『stop』は古英語の『stoppian』で「遮る・止める」を意味した。
『f-stop』は19世紀の光学用語『f-number』や、初期カメラの光を制限する機械的な『stop（絞り・ストッパー）』から変化し、やがて『f-number』と同義で使われるようになった。
当初は光を物理的に止める『stop（遮断具）』を指していたが、次第に絞りの数値（f値）を表す用語になった。
