語源
「episode」はギリシャ語の『epísōidion』に由来し、接頭辞の『epi-』は「〜の上に」、『ōidē』は「歌（頌）・歌詞」を意味した。
『epísōidion』は後にラテン語や中世ラテン語の形を経てフランス語の『épisode』となり、最終的に現代英語の『episode』になった。
当初は「劇の合間に歌われる部分」を意味していたが、次第に「連続するものの中の一つの部分・出来事」という現在の意味に変化した。
