「end-piece」は英語の合成語で「'end'＋'piece'」に由来する。'end'はOld Englishの'end'（終わり）を、'piece'はOld Frenchの'piece'（部分・破片）を意味した。
'end'は古英語の'end'（Proto-Germanic *andjaに由来）から、'piece'はOld Frenchの'piece'（Late Latinの'petia'「部分」から）を経て来ている。それらが近代英語で合成されて'end-piece'（または'endpiece'）になった。
当初は文字どおり「何かの末尾にある一片」を指していたが、徐々に短い結びの文章・装飾的な挿し絵や端部の部品など特定の終末的なものを指す用法に定着した。
