「enchondroma」はニューラテン語/ギリシャ語に由来し、ギリシャ語の要素「en-（中に）」「chondros（軟骨）」「-oma（腫瘍）」から成る。
ギリシャ語の『ἐνχόνδρος（骨の中の軟骨）』からニューラテン語の医学用語『enchondroma』へと発展し、19世紀に現代英語の医学用語として定着した。
