語源
『emcee』は英語に由来し、略語『MC』（『master of ceremonies』の略）に由来する。'M'は'master'、'C'は'ceremonies'を表していた。
略語『MC』は20世紀初頭に『master of ceremonies』を指す表現として現れ、20世紀中頃に綴りを崩した形の'emcee'が名詞および動詞として一般化した。
当初はイベントの責任者を指す『master of ceremonies』を意味していたが、次第に一般的な司会者・プレゼンターを指すようになり、『司会をする』という動詞用法も生じた。
