語源
「elliptic」はラテン語『ellipticus』に由来し、最終的にはギリシャ語『elliptikos』から来ており、『elleipsis』（不足・省略）を意味する。
『elleipsis』（ギリシャ語）→『elliptikos』→ラテン語『ellipticus』を経て、学術語として中世を通り英語の 'elliptic' になった。
当初は「不足・省略」に関する意味だったが、やがて幾何学的な『楕円』を表す語になり、さらに『言葉を省く（省略的）』という比喩的意味も生じた。
