語源
「elision」はラテン語に由来し、具体的にはラテン語の「elidere」から来ており、'e-'（'ex-'の変形）は「外へ」を、'lidere'は「打ち払う」を意味した。
「elision」は中世フランス語の「élision」を経て英語の「elision」になり、『打ち払う』という意味から徐々に『省くこと』という意味に狭まった。
当初は物理的に『打ち払う／剥ぎ取る』という意味だったが、時間とともに『（特に音や語の）省略』という現代的な意味に変化した。
