語源
「diphycercal」は新ラテン語の『diphycercalis』に由来し、ギリシャ語起源の要素『di-（二つ、二重）』と尾を意味する『kerkos』からなる接尾辞『-cercal』によって構成されている。
新ラテン語の『diphycercalis』（魚類の学術記述で用いられた）が英語の学術用語『diphycercal』に入り、形は大きく変わらなかった。
当初は（脊椎が尾の先端まで達し、両葉が左右対称の）特定の尾の構造を指す学術用語として使われ、現代でもその専門的な意味はほとんど維持されている。
