語源
'detritus'はラテン語の過去分詞『dētritus』に由来し、ここで『dē-』は「離れて・離す」を、『terere』は「擦る・すり減らす」を意味した。
ラテン語では『すり減った物質』を意味しており、学術ラテン語を介して17世紀ごろに英語に取り入れられ、一般的な名詞として『がれき・破片・有機ごみ』の意味で用いられるようになった。
当初は『擦り減ってできた物質』を意味したが、次第に『破片・有機的残渣・廃棄物』といったより広い意味に発展した。
