語源
「de-」（取り除く・逆にする）＋動詞「program」＋名詞化接尾辞「-ing」から成る語で、直接の語源は動詞「deprogram」である。
「deprogram」は20世紀に作られた比較的新しい合成語で、ラテン語起源の接頭辞「de-」と、ギリシャ語prográmma（→ラテン語・フランス語経由）の「program」が結合している。1960～1980年代にかけて、特にカルトの洗脳解除を指す用法で定着した。
もともとは「取り除く」＋「（計画・書かれたもの）」の意味合いだったが、時代とともに主に心理的・社会的刷り込みを解除する行為を指すようになり、コンピュータのプログラム削除を指す用法は副次的になった。
