「demonstration」はラテン語、特に動詞「demonstrare」由来の「demonstratio」から生じ、『示す・指し示す』という意味を持っていた。

ラテン語の「demonstratio」が古フランス語の「démonstration」を経て中英語（例：Middle Englishの「demonstracioun」）に入り、現在の英語の「demonstration」になった。

当初は「見せる・指し示す行為」を意味したが、次第に「証明」や「公的な抗議行動」といった意味に広がった。
