語源
「decrepitude」はラテン語の「decrepitus」あるいは名詞形「decrepitudo」に由来し、接頭辞「de-」は「下へ・強意」を、語根「crepare」は「きしる・音を立てる」を意味し、年をとって傷み朽ちるという意味を生んだ。
「decrepitude」は古フランス語の「décrépitude」や中世ラテン語の語形を経て、現代英語の「decrepitude」になった。
元来は割れたりきしんだりする状態（文字通り）を指したが、次第に年齢や放置による弱体化・衰退のより広い意味を表すようになった。
