語源
「decalogue」はギリシャ語を経て後期ラテン語・中世ラテン語から来ており、もともとはギリシャ語の「dekalógos（デカロゴス）」に由来する。'deka-'は「10」を、'lógos'は「言葉」「語」「述べること」を意味した。
ギリシャ語の「dekalógos」は後期ラテン語で「decalogus」となり、さらに中英語・教会ラテン語を経て現代英語の「decalogue」になった。
当初は「10の言葉（十戒）」を文字どおり指していたが、次第に10項目の規則や基本原則を指す広い意味でも用いられるようになった。
