語源
「crystal」はギリシャ語の単語「κρυστάλλος」（krystallos／krustallos）に由来し、語根は「氷」または「氷のように透明なもの」を意味した。
「crystal」はギリシャ語「κρυστάλλος」からラテン語の「crystallum」になり、続いて古フランス語の「cristal」を経て中英語を通じて現代英語の「crystal」になった。
当初は「氷」を意味していたが、次第に「透明な鉱物」や「規則的な内部構造を持つ固体」を指すように意味が変化した。
