語源
「conversos」はスペイン語の「converso」から来ており、「con-」は「一緒に」、「verso」（ラテン語の「vertere」に由来）は「回す・向ける」を意味した。
「conversos」はラテン語の過去分詞「conversus」（動詞「convertere」）から古いスペイン語の「converso」を経て、歴史用語として英語に取り入れられた。
