「chlamydospore」はギリシャ語の「chlamys」に由来し、「chlamys」は「マント」または「外套」を意味し、「spore」は「spora」から「種子」を意味する。

「chlamydospore」はギリシャ語の「chlamydosporos」から直接借用され、最終的に現代英語の「chlamydospore」になった。

当初は「保護カバーを持つ胞子」を意味し、この意味は現代でもほぼ同じである。
