語源
「chalicothere」は新ラテン語の『Chalicotherium』に由来し、古代ギリシャ語の語根『chalix(χάλιξ)』は「小石・礫」を、『therion(θηρίον)』は「獣」を意味した。
『Chalicotherium』は19世紀に学名として作られた語で、ギリシャ語の要素を組み合わせたもの。英語ではその属の個体や近縁の動物を指す語として'chalicothere'が採用され、複数形'chalicotheres'も用いられるようになった。
当初は属名『Chalicotherium』を指したが、次第に科（Chalicotheriidae）に属する個体全般を指す語として使われるようになった。
