語源
「carnation」はラテン語、特に後期ラテン語の語『carnationem』（『carnatio』）に由来し、語根『caro, carnis』は「肉（flesh）」を意味した。
『carnation』は後期ラテン語の『carnationem』から中世フランス語・中英語を経て現代英語の『carnation』になったと考えられる（古フランス語の影響あり）。
当初は「肉の色」を意味していたが、やがてその淡いピンク色を持つ花に呼びならわされ、さらに花の名から色名にも使われるようになった。
